ECSF Series Preview: Sixers vs Celtics Full Regular Season Series Highlights | Boston Wins 3-1
Series preview: New-school Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers re-start playoff rivalry
Series between young squads could be first of many in postseasons to come. The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers each have one of the league's best rookies and one of its best second-year players, with even more young talent beyond that. That talent is only going to get better and both teams are set up to rule the Eastern Conference for the next few years. But for one of these teams of the future, the present includes a trip to the conference finals … and maybe more. The Sixers have been on a tear over the last six weeks, ending the regular season on a 16-game winning streak and defeating the Miami Heat in five games in the first round, with Rookie of the Year favorite Ben Simmons averaging a triple-double over that 20-1 stretch. The Celtics have been the most resilient team in the league, overcoming a myriad of injuries to play the league's best defense in the regular season and dispatch the Milwaukee Bucks in a seven-game series. The Celtics got Marcus Smart back for the last three games of the first round, but remain shorthanded with Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward out for the season. Generating offense without Irving has been difficult and it may remain so against the size of the Sixers. Of course, defense has taken the Celtics this far, and it remains ever reliable. The Sixers struggled to score against it in the regular season, but it's been more than three months since these teams last faced each other and a lot has changed for Philadelphia since then.
Boston Celtics @ Philadelphia 76ers (102:92) – October 20, 2017
Boston had an opening week it would love to do over: Gordon Hayward, its prized free-agent signing, was lost to a gruesome injury, and the Celtics lost their first two games. On the ropes against a 76ers team looking to prove "The Process" is more than a catchphrase, Kyrie Irving gave a glimpse why he may be the man in Boston that he so longed to be in Cleveland. Irving scored 21 points, Al Horford had 17 and the Celtics won for the first time since losing Hayward, 102-92 over Philadelphia on Friday night.
Philadelphia 76ers @ Boston Celtics (97:108) – November 30, 2017
Isaiah Thomas developed a reputation in Boston for big performances late in games. It's quickly becoming apparent that the Celtics probably have an even more potent scoring weapon in Kyrie Irving. The star guard scored 36 points and Boston held off the weary and short-handed Philadelphia 76ers 108-97 on Thursday night to improve the NBA's best record to 19-4.
Boston Celtics @ Philadelphia 76ers (114:103) – January 11, 2018
Ten seasons ago, the Boston Celtics came to London and won. They went on to win the NBA title. As they repeated the first half of that feat with a comeback victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday night, the Eastern Conference-leading Celtics provided more evidence that they can emulate that 2007-08 squad. Kyrie Irving had 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds and Boston overcame a 22-point deficit to beat the 76ers 114-103 in the eighth regular season NBA game played in England.
Philadelphia 76ers @Boston Celtics (89:80) – January 18, 2018
Joel Embiid is headed to the NBA All-Star game for the first time, and he celebrated with another impressive performance. Embiid scored 26 points and matched a career best with 16 rebounds, leading the 76ers to an 89-80 win over the Boston Celtics on Thursday night. Dario Saric scored 16 for Philadelphia, which won for the sixth time in seven games. T.J. McConnell had 15 points -- all in the second half.
